Furniture Tips
French Polishing In recent times the term “French Polishing” has become the generic term for wood finishing. French polishing is only one of four types of wood finish available. These are in order of durability:
-
Oil
-
Lacquer
-
French Polish
-
Wax
Furniture Medic with its considerable experience in wood finishing is able to advise on the most appropriate finish for your furniture, depending on its intended use.
Cleaning of modern lacquer finished furniture.
Contrary to popular belief the use of proprietary polishes and cleaning solutions is not recommended. All that the majority of modern lacquer finished furniture requires is a damp cloth followed by a dry soft cloth, and nothing else!
Oiled Finishes One of the oldest and most durable finishes known to man has recently been re-introduced on modern furniture. The oil product most commonly used on domestic furniture is known as “Danish Oil” which can be purchased from most reputable DIY shops.
When purchasing new furniture of this type, it is recommended that the oil finish is topped up once a month for the first three months, then once a year thereafter.
For best results cut back the existing finish using fine wire wool (0000 grade), dusting off any residue, then applying the new finish with a soft cloth, wiping off any excess to finish.
